Technical Advisor to the Minister of Youth and Sports, Dr. Emmanuel Owusu Ansah, says the ability to win medals was the main consideration when Ghana’s contingent was being put together for the 2019 African Games in Morocco.

The nation will be represented by 91 athletes across 14 disciplines in the Games which start on August 16.

Dr. Owusu Ansah believes that Ghana has what it takes to pick up medals at the Games and that is why the 91 athletes were chosen.

“I am very satisfied with the type of athletes we have. This time, we are concentrating on the quality of the athletes and not the quantity of athletes we are taking to the Games.

All the chosen athletes are going to to lift the flag of Ghana high. We expect everybody to be in the finals of their respective events and win a medal.

Previously, we would see athletes going out in the early stages of their events.

However, we want to Ghana in the finals and winning medals and that is our target for the Games in Morocco.”

Dr. Owusu Ansah visited the team over the weekend on behalf of the Sports Minister, Isaac Asiamah. The team is expected to leave Ghana on Tuesday, August 13, for the event.

In which events is Ghana taking part?

Ghana will take part in volleyball (2 participants), karate-do (5 participants), weightlifting (5 participants), boxing (10 participants), tennis (6 participants), judo (5 participants), table tennis ( 6 participants), cycling ( 2 participants), badminton (4 participants), fencing (4 participants), tae-kwon-do (5 participants), athletics (16 athletes), swimming (3 participants) and football (18).
