U-23 AFCON: Egypt sting Ghana 3-2 in second Group A tie

Ghana’s Black Meteors lost 3-2 to Egypt on Monday night in their second Group A game of the U-23 AFCON tournament to leave them with a slim chance of qualifying to the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.

The Black Meteors started brightly and they got onto the score sheet first after 6 minutes through captain Yaw Yeboah. He finished from close range from Samuel Obeng’s cut back into the Egyptian penalty area.

Obeng was picked up out well by Edward Sarpong and he showed skill and patience to beat his man and feed Yeboah for the goal.

However, the Egyptians came back and took control of the match and 11 minutes after going behind, they got level through a Mostafa Mohammed header. The forward was left unmarked as he rose to meet a cross from Ahmed Mohammed.

The Young Pharoahs almost made it 2-1 from Ramadan Sobhi but his shot was tipped over the bar by Ghana goalie, Kwame Baah.

But it was Ghana that made it 2-1 right at the start of the second half. An under-hit back pass from Egypt set up Obeng who rounded the Egyptian goalie, Mohammed Sobhy, to score into an empty net.

The home side cranked up the pressure to find the equaliser and after several misses which included even hitting the cross bar, Ramadan Sobhi got the goal after Kwame Baah spilled a shot in the 82nd minute.

More pressure followed and Egypt went 3-2 ahead in the 87th minute through Ahmed Rayyan who headed in a Sobhi corner kick.

The Black Meteors will now have to beat Mali on Friday while hoping that Egypt defeat Cameroon so they will have a chance of making it to the last four of the tournament.
