“Taylor was the better dribbler” – Ishmael Addo weighs in on Charles Taylor vs Don Bortey debate

Former Hearts of Oak striker, Ishmael Addo, has weighed in on the raging debate among football fans about which of his former teammates, Bernard Don Bortey and Charles Taylor, was the better player.

Last month, Ghanaian football fans took to twitter to compare the two players with Hearts of Oak fans mostly favoring Don Bortey and Asante Kotoko fans picking Taylor.

Addo, 43, played with both players at Hearts of Oak, winning the CAF Champions League title with Taylor in 2000 and with Don Bortey from 2001 till 2004.

Speaking in an interview with TV3, Addo, who scored 103 goals in 124 appearances for the Phobians said he enjoyed playing with both players who both brought different qualities to the team.

“A couple of days ago, a friend of mine was telling me about this [debate] and I don’t even understand why [they are being compared],” he began.

“Looking at these two players, they have different styles of play altogether though they are both wingers.

“Taylor is a better dribbler than Bortey but Bortey also has some qualities that Taylor doesn’t have. Bortey has more pace,” he said.

“It is difficult to compare the two of them because they are both different but I enjoyed playing with both them. They both contributed a lot to Ghana football and Hearts of Oak.”

Pressed on about which of the two players he enjoyed playing with more, Addo refused to pick an outright favorite, preferring to extol the different qualities the two players brought on board.

“I enjoyed playing with Taylor who had the skills to make things happen, and I enjoyed playing with Bortey with his crosses and speed.

“They both added something to my game and I must say it a pleasure playing with them,” he concluded.

Ishmael Addo still holds the record for the highest number of goals in a single season in the Ghana Premier League with 22 goals in the 2001 campaign.
