Ghana cannot win a medal at Tokyo Olympic Games – Ben Nunoo Mensah

President of the Ghana Olympics Committee, Ben Nunoo Mensah does not believe the country can win a medal at the Tokyo Olympic Games.

Since first participating in the Olympics in 1965, Ghana has only won four medals, coming from boxing(three) and football (one).

Ghana has never won a gold medal at the Olympics, with the country’s only silver medal coming from Light Welter-weight boxer, Clement Quartey at the 1960 Rome Games.

The last time the country won a medal at the global event was at the 1992 Olympics where the Black Meteors won a bronze medal.

Speaking on Citi TV’s the Tracker, Nunoo Mensah said any discussion of potentially winning medals in the now rescheduled games in 2021 is devoid of the reality of the country’s capacity in athletics.

“There’s no way we can win a medal in Tokyo 2020 but as they always say, in sports anything can happen.

“If we are going to win medals by virtue of performing fairly with everybody, it will be extremely difficult, he said.

“That should tell us that there is something we are not doing right.

“I think the last time we won a medal was back in 1992 where the Black Meteors won a Bronze medal and since then we haven’t won a medal at the Olympics and we don’t look like we would win a medal in Tokyo.

“What we should be looking at is doing better than what we did at Rio, that is the only way we can say as a nation we are progressing.” he concluded.

Ghana currently has four athletes who have qualified for the Tokyo Games which has been rescheduled for 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic: Nadia Eke – Triple Jump, Joseph Paul Amoah – Sprinter, Samuel Takyie – Boxer, Sulemana Tetteh – Boxer.
