In 1966, Ghana set a new record in the men’s 4×110 metres relays, beating Jamaica and Australia in the process with a time of 39.8 seconds at the Commonwealth Games.

The Ghanaian quartet representing the nation in Kingston, Jamaica were Bonner K. Mends, Ebenezer Charles Oko Addy, James Aryee Addy and Stanley Fabian Allotey.

Before the final race, Ghana had already set a new Commonwealth record with a time of 39.9 seconds in the 4×110 metres heat and were favourites to claim the top spot.

Lining up against Ghana were Jamaica, Wales, England, Nigeria, Canada, Trinidad and Tobago and Australia.

Ghana started the race in lane 8 and went ahead to set a new Commonwealth Games record as at that time with a time of 39.8 seconds, a second better than before.

Ghana started the race with James Aryee Addy, Oko Addy ran the back straight; Bonner Mends ran the bend and Stanley Allotey brought it home, holding off a late charge by the Jamaicans.
