Chelsea icon Michael Essien has deleted an Instagram post in which he supported gay rights in Ghana after being hit by backlash.

He lost over 500,000 followers on the platform after drumming support for the LGBTQ community in Ghana.

Ghana president Nana Akufo-Addo recently declared same-sex marriages will never be allowed under his leadership.

Michael Essien then took to social media to call for the legalization of the LGBTQ community and given equal treatment in the country. The ex-midfielder, 38, wrote on Instagram: ”

Ghana supports equality. We see you, we support you.

“Our LGBTQIA plus Community in Ghana.”

The post he made sparked rage in Ghanaians and social media users who stormed the comment section to drag him to filth.

One comment on his post read: “You just lost your one follower, good luck, byee.”

Another said: “Delete else you will loose (sic) followers.”

He would ultimately lose over 500,000 followers on Instagram after making the post leaving him 1.4 million out of the 1.9 million followers he had initially.

The severity of the backlash forced him to delete the post from his media pages.

Essien is currently working as a coach for Danish club Nordsjaelland.

He helped Chelsea win the Champions League, two Premier League titles, four FA Cups and a League Cup before ending his nine-year Stamford Bridge spell in 2014.

A then record £24.4million Blues buy from Lyon, he also played for Real Madrid, AC Milan, Bastia and clubs in Greece, Indonesia and Azerbaijan.
