GOLD FIELDS PGA TOURNAMENT

International golfers have been given the green light to rejoin the 2022 Gold Fields Golf Tournament.

This follows the decision by the organizers to lift the restrictions put in place for the 2020 and 2021 editions due to covid 19.

The 9th edition of the tournament is scheduled to take place from Wednesday, 30th November to Saturday, 3rd December 2022 at the 18-hole Damang Golf Course in the Western Region.

Over 70 pro golfers participated in six qualifiers and the top 24 have sailed through to compete for honours.

Speaking at the Media Briefing, the Executive Vice President and Head of Gold Fields West Africa, Joshua Mortoti, expressed delight at the return of international players to the tournament.

“I’m pleased to note that this year, we are lifting the restrictions to allow all professional golfers who made it through the qualifiers to participate in the tournament.”

“With the lifting of the Covid-19 restrictions, international players, who had not been able to participate in the previous two editions, can now rejoin the tournament. We have therefore invited eight international players. Prior to the pandemic, pro golfers from Nigeria, Cote d’Ivoire, Togo, Zimbabwe, Senegal, and Gabon participated in the tournament.”

“Our 2019 champion, Christopher Francis, was from Nigeria but unfortunately, he couldn’t defend his title in 2020. So we are excited to welcome them back to the game”.

The tournament has been grouped into the regular pros and seniors’ categories.

The winner of the regular competition takes home GHC50,000 whiles the champion of the seniors’ event will get GHC20,000.

A total of GHC300,000 will be shared as prize money. The President of the Professional Golfers Association, Mark Cofie said:

“It’s going to culminate in the final of the 2022 Tour where the professional golfers have been vying for ranking points. At the end of this tournament, we will have the PGA Championship Champion and the Tour crown. It’s going to be an exciting event. It will be interesting to see what will happen at the end of this four-day tournament.”

In all, 32 regular pros and 16 seniors will compete. The regulars will play all rounds for two days and will be cut to 24 for the remaining days.

The seniors will play all rounds for two days and will be cut to 8 for the last day.

Executives from Gold Fields and other special guests will also participate in the one-day amateur competition.
