Ghana Basketball Association (GBBA) Vice President (Administration), Alex Kukula, has singled out scheduling reasons as the main reason behind the low number of countries expected to compete in the upcoming FIBA Africa Under 16 qualifiers.
The qualifiers are to be held in Ghana from June 22 to June 24 at the Eden Heights in Accra with Nigeria and Cote D’Ivoire set to battle for qualification slots at the continental competition alongside host nation Ghana.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with Citi Sports, the GBBA Vice said the tournament came a bit too soon for countries who are building up their national teams.
“I think this-tournament-came too early for some countries that’s the indication I am getting from our colleagues from the other countries so I just think it’s a cyclical thing. They are not ready yet for this tournament.”
A Local Organizing Committee for the tournament was inaugurated by National Sports Authority (NSA) Director General Professor Peter Twumasi in a brief ceremony.
GBBA President Ato Van-Ess promised Ghana will “host and win” the tournament. (Click highlighted text to read report)
