There is a disconnect between the public and football people- Jerome Otchere on GFA elections

Veteran sports journalist Jerome Otchere has shared his biggest takeaway from Ghana Football Association (GFA) President Kurt Okraku’s victory at the 2023 GFA Elections.

The incumbent GFA President went unopposed in the race and had 117 of 120 delegates vote for him to serve a second four year term in office.

George Afriyie was disqualified from running in the GFA Presidential race in the lead up to the elections in a controversial manner.

However, there is a significant section of the Ghanaian public that isn’t pleased with the Okraku led administration with a Ghana Football Stakeholders Forum led demonstration, held at the GFA Headquarters calling for the elections not to be held in the face of a court injunction.

Despite the potential legal consequences, the elections went ahead and former Kotoko Express editor Otchere, believes there is a disconnect between public expectations for football in Ghana and what is being done by those in the football space.

“There is always a disconnect, there has always been a disconnect what members of the public feel about our game and how they see it and how the handful of people who vote to decide on what to the game. There is always a disconnect between how they see things and how the public see things.”

Former GFA Vice President George Afriyie

George Afriyie’s sponsored court injunction is due to be heard in court on October 12.
