The Nevada State Athletic Commission has hit back at referee Tony Weeks’ statement explaining his reason for controversially stopping Ghana boxer Fredrick Lawson’s fight in a first round loss to Vergil Ortiz Jr.
The controversial stoppage took place this past weekend when Weeks called off the fight after Lawson took in several punches but didn’t look hurt. (Click highlighted text to read full story)
Weeks responded to the post fight criticism by stating that two pre fight medical scans showed that Lawson had aneurysm- a condition that causes bleeding inside the body and could lead to death.
Weeks added in his statement that a third doctor cleared Lawson for the fight and the medical scans influenced his decision to stop the fight early.
Veteran boxing referee Weeks has come under a lot of pressure recently after making a similar controversial stop in Rolando Romero’s bout against Ismael Barroso earlier in 2023.
However, the Nevada State Athletic Commission released a statement that refuted Weeks statement on the medical condition of the fighters.
The Commission stated in the release that, “All contestants in the event were subject to full medical examinations and were cleared by medical experts to compete without restrictions.”
