Ghana’s Samuel Takyi is on the brink of securing his second medal in a major tournament, having clinched a berth in the men’s Light Welterweight final.
Takyi advanced with a majority decision victory over John Paul Masamba in Thursday’s semi-final bout.
Despite a tight contest, four judges sided with the Ghanaian, while one judge favoured the South African in the 63kg showdown.
Regardless of the outcome in the final – whether Takyi claims gold or settles for silver – he is set to add to his bronze medal from the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.
In another impressive display, Abubakar Kamoko, son of Braimah Kamoko (Bukom Banku), booked his place in the men’s Cruiserweight final with a split decision win over Nathan Mbeli Nlandu.
Despite a narrow margin, four judges scored in favour of Kamoko, securing his spot in the final and the opportunity to surpass his father’s bronze medal from the 1999 African Games in Johannesburg.
Adding to Ghana’s medal prospects, Amadu Mohammed secured at least a silver after a commanding majority (5-0) victory over Imad Azoui in the men’s Bantamweight (54kg) semi-final.
Teammate Mohammed Aryeetey is also in contention for gold, set to face Tulembekwa Zola Stevens in the Minimumweight (48 kg) final on Friday at 16:45 GMT.
Following closely, Joseph Commey is gearing up for a showdown against Zambia’s Andrew Chilata in the Lightweight (60 Kg) final later on Friday, with both fighters eyeing the top prize.
