The 2023 African Games has been bedeviled by several challenges chiefly among them those on provision of proper equipment to athletes.
Ghanaian athletes have complained about the situation and Ghana Beach Volleyball player Seidu Adjanaku’s did same regarding the lack of protective socks to compete.
However, the Ghana Volleyball Association in a statement release, distanced itself from Adjanaku’s comments over the lack of equipment.
Adjanaku made the complaint after Ghana lost in two straight sets to Morocco in the quarterfinals of the Men’s Beach Volleyball event at the Laboma Beach. However, Adjanaku picked up a toe injury in the previous game against Algeria.
In an exclusive interview with Citi Sports, Ghana Volleyball Association President George Tettey doubled down on this stance saying,
“All the matches we were winning, none of them had they won the protective stockings. We gave a list of items we needed for the competition, we did not request for protective stockings. If they (the players) needed it, they would have told us as a board.”
“What does it take to buy protective stockings? It would be very unfair for us to condemn the government for not providing stockings…as if we are being ungrateful to all the efforts being done.”
Morocco beat South Africa in the final to win gold while Botswana beat Sierra Leone to win bronze while Egypt, Mozambique and Nigeria finished first, second and third respectively in the Women’s Division.
