Local Organizing Committee (LOC) Chairman of the 2023 African Games, Dr. Kwaku Ofosu-Asare, has stated emphatically that the recently held event had no case of food poisoning despite having a large contingent of athletes, volunteers, medical officers and competition officials take part in the multi-sport competition.
He said this during a media briefing by the Committee to debunk several speculations over expenditure surrounding the 13th African Games that was held in Ghana from March 8 to March 23 mainly at the Borteyman Sports Complex and University of Ghana Stadium.
The African Games had host Ghana win a record 69 medals despite the aftermath of the competition being rocked by several controversies including delay in payment of allowances to volunteers.
In his extensive address, Dr. Ofosu-Asare stated that there was no case of food poisoning to any athlete or official who was part of the 2023 African Games despite having 12,902 people to feed four times a day.
“I want to say emphatically that there wasn’t any person who had food poison. This is a great achievement. Elsewhere, people have these challenges…and instead of our brothers and sisters in the media praising us for this, it is only the $15 million (reportedly spent on feeding at the Games).”
