Ranking Member on the Sports Committee of Ghana’s Parliament, Wisdom Mensah Woyome, doesn’t understand why payment of bonuses to athletes who starred at the 2023 African Games have delayed.
The Member of Parliament for the South Tongu Constituency chimed in on the ongoing tussle between disgruntled athletes and the Ministry of Youth and Sports over the unfulfilled arrangement.
Almost two months after the conclusion of the 13th African Games that were held in Ghana for the first time, Ghanaian athletes who scooped up medals at the multi-sport competition are yet to be rewarded with financial packages that include $3000 for gold medal winners.
“I think this (payment of bonuses) shouldn’t delay because it will be a disservice because this is an area that we’ve all along wanted to motivate and get many more talented people to really veer into.”
“So we think that once it was part of the package promised them, they should be able to get that across to them. I don’t know and understand why we should be delaying in getting them all these (payments)” he said in an exclusive interview with Citi Sports.
Ghana won a record 69 medals at the 2023 African Games with 19 being gold.
