The second edition of the Beach Rugby League wrapped up in spectacular fashion at Laboma Beach Resort on September 21, 2024, with Beaufort Properties successfully defending their title and becoming champions for the second year in a row.
This exciting tournament brought together 16 teams from various sectors, cementing its place as one of the fastest-growing sporting events in Ghana.
The day kicked off with a community beach cleanup, in support of the Seventh World Beach Cleanup Day, where players, volunteers, and representatives from corporate Ghana worked together to tidy the beach before the matches began. After the cleanup, attention shifted to the Beach Rugby League, with 16 teams split into the following groups:
– **Group 1**: Bolt Ghana, Jibu Ghana, Ghana Wildlife Society, DHL
– **Group 2**: France Voluntaire Ghana, Ecozoil, Regardless Mode, CMA CGM
– **Group 3**: Rotary Club, Hapag Lloyd, Sahara Solace, Beaufort Properties
– **Group 4**: Street Sense Organisation, Lions Club, Polytank, Ghana Link
Each group delivered electrifying performances, showcasing teamwork, skill, and determination. After 31 fiercely contested matches, Beaufort Properties triumphed once again, securing the championship for the second consecutive year. Ghana Wildlife Society finished a close second, displaying remarkable resilience and talent throughout the tournament.
Michael Agyei-Budu, CEO of Regardless Mode and one of the event’s key partners, applauded the success of the event, stating:
“Beach Rugby League keeps growing, and this year was no exception. The competition was intense, and it was truly inspiring to witness everyone coming together for both the game and the beach cleanup.”
Kate Opoku, Country Leader for Let’s Do It Ghana, also praised the event:
“The combination of rugby and environmental efforts was truly amazing. It proves we can care for our planet while enjoying activities like rugby. This initiative extends beyond just sports—it’s about creating lasting positive change.”
The event brought together the excitement of rugby with a focus on environmental sustainability, emphasizing the commitment of the Rugby League Federation Ghana to not only promote the sport but also advocate for environmental responsibility.
Jafaru Awudu Mustapha, General Manager of the federation, commented:
“This year’s tournament highlights the growing interest in rugby league in Ghana. The addition of the beach cleanup makes the event even more meaningful, showing how sports can impact the community beyond the field.”
