Ghana has made history in rugby league development, becoming the first African nation to host both Level 1 and Level 2 Rugby League Coaching and Match Officials Courses.

The groundbreaking event, held from January 5–8, 2025, took place at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium and Legon Rugby Field, drawing participants from four regions and diverse professional backgrounds.

The four-day intensive training program welcomed representatives from senior and basic schools, the National Sports Authority (NSA), immigration services, and rugby league clubs.

Under the guidance of renowned experts Martin Crick (Educators Manager), Gaby Haddad (Coach Tutor), and Phil Smith (Match Official Educator), participants gained both technical insights and practical skills aimed at advancing rugby league in Ghana and across Africa.

Madame Juliana Storey, President of the Rugby League Federation Ghana (RLFG), celebrated this monumental achievement:

“This historic milestone reaffirms Ghana’s leadership in rugby league development on the continent. We are proud to set a precedent for sustainable growth in the sport.”

Participants expressed excitement about the impact of the training.

Julius Amevor, a Level 2 coach from the NSA Ashanti Region, shared:

“The program has equipped me with essential tools to identify and nurture talent, contributing to the growth of rugby league in Ghana.”

Jennifer Teiko Moncar, a newly certified Level 1 match official, highlighted the importance of the initiative:

“This experience has deepened my understanding of officiating, empowering me to enhance rugby league at the grassroots level.”

Marshall Nortey, RLFG Technical Director, emphasized the significance of the courses:

“This initiative lays a strong foundation for the future of the rugby league in Ghana. The passion and commitment displayed by participants have been truly inspiring.”

Key Achievements:

  • 16 Level 1 coaches certified
  • 11 Level 2 coaches certified
  • 14 Level 1 match officials certified
  • 4 Level 2 match officials certified
  • 1 accredited coach educator trained

Jafaru A. Mustapha, General Manager of RLFG, described the accomplishment as a landmark moment for rugby league in Africa.

He extended gratitude to the educators, participants, and partners whose contributions ensured the success of the program.

This historic milestone underscores Ghana’s leadership role in African rugby league, setting the stage for continued growth and development of the sport across the continent.
