Afcon 2025Q: Kwesi Appiah’s dual role as Coach of Sudan & GFA Exco Member is an untidy situation – Randy Abbey

Executive Council Member of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Randy Abbey, has expressed concerns over Kwesi Appiah’s dual responsibilities as head coach of Sudan and a member of the GFA Executive Council.

Abbey described the situation as “untidy,” raising questions about the potential conflict of interest and the practicality of balancing both roles effectively.

Appiah, a former coach of the Ghana national team, was recently appointed as the head coach of Sudan’s national football team while still serving on the GFA’s Executive Council.

This development has sparked a debate within the football community, with some questioning how Appiah can manage these significant duties in two different capacities.

The issue has become a topic of discussion among stakeholders, as the GFA continues to manage its responsibilities on both the local and international fronts, with the two countries, Ghana and Sudan set to meet at the Accra Sports Stadium on October 11, 2024, in the matchday 3 of the 2025 AFCON Qualifiers.

He said this on Metro TV Sports in the lead-up to Ghana’s clash against the Sudanese.

Kwesi Appiah has not attended any meetings since the AFCON draw, he has not attended any meetings.

So I’m sure he’s exempting himself because obviously he knows that issues of the game will be discussed.

Well, it’s an untidy situation but we have to do everything we can to win that game.

We know the consequences if we don’t win.

So we need to win that and then once we have dealt with that, we will then focus on the subsequent game.

But of course, for now, we need to focus on how we will get the three points at all costs against Sudan in Accra.
