FIFA Under 20 World Cup winner, Daniel Agyei, has praised Sudan’s National Men’s Football Coach Eric Amponsah for helping him deal with Ghana’s 1-0 loss to Egypt in the 2010 AFCON Final.
Agyei was part of the Black Satellites group that got promoted to the Black Stars to compete in the 2010 AFCON in Angola after winning the Under World Cup in 2009. The Satellites’ group included Andre Dede Ayew, Emmanuel Agyemang-Badu and Samuel Inkoom.
In an exclusive interview with Citi Sports, Agyei says his time at Medeama was successful thanks to the help of goalkeeper trainer Eric Amponsah who also has a background in psychology.
“The AFCON final you miss it, you couldn’t win the trophy for the nation, sometimes, you can get traumatized… I thought we had let the nation down… but when I went to Medeama, they brought in Eric Amponsah. Any game that I lost in Medeama, he wasn’t there. Any game that we drew or we won, he was always there. He always psyched me up.”
Eric Amponsah was on the bench for Sudan’s National Football Team that beat Ghana 2-0 and drew goalless with the Black Stars in a double header in the 2025 AFCON qualifiers.
Prior to his Sudan appointment, Amponsah served on Accra Hearts of Oak, Medeama and Berekum Chelsea.
