Former Medeama and Liberty Professionals goalkeeper Daniel Agyei has called for Ghanaian clubs to have psychologists attached to their outfits.
He said this in an exclusive interview with Citi Sports while reflecting on his career after winning the 2009 FIFA Under 20 World Cup. However, he missed out on winning the 2010 AFCON after Ghana lost 1-0 to Egypt in the final.
Agyei spoke about the help he got from former Medeama SC goalkeeper trainer Eric Amponsah after the 2010 AFCON loss. Amponsah is with the Sudan National Men’s Football Team and the team recently beat Ghana 2-0 to move closer to qualifying to the 2025 AFCON. (Click highlighted text to read full story)
“Yes (we need psychologists) If we want our football to go further. In Europe, they (football teams) have. Some of the African clubs, they have. There are some players who can overcome (certain family problems, certain issues), there are some players who can’t overcome. If you don’t have these psychologists, players will be going up and coming down. Their form wouldn’t be stable.”
In a related development, Ghana’s Black Stars don’t have a psychologist on its roster and many have pointed to this as a major reason behind the team’s recent struggles.
