Member of Parliament for Berekum West Constituency, Dickson Kyere-Duah, has sounded an urgent call for very strong punitive actions to be taken by stakeholders to curb hooliganism in Ghana football.
He said this in his address to Ghana’s Ninth Parliament in the Fourth Republic as violent acts at football league venues continue to be rife.
At the time of his address, games in the Ghana Premier League, have been suspended after Kumasi Asante Kotoko fan Francis Yaw “Pooley” Frimpong died from stab wounds he suffered in a league game against Nsoatreman.
Referee Eso Doh Morrison was attacked after an Access Bank Division One game between Elmina Sharks and Swedru All Blacks and the Berekum West MP, who is a former sports journalist, believes that a different approach is needed to address the problem after several tries at education and sensitization.

“Honourable speaker, despite all the education, reminders, sensitizations, sanctions aimed at eradicating hooliganism, the act continues to be part of the Ghanaian game with many casualties frequently recorded. The situation calls for urgent action from all stakeholders. We as Parliamentarians have roles to play…there is an urgent need for us to work collectively to eradicate such barbaric acts from our game.”
