A member of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) Communications Team, Sheikh Tophic Sienu, believes that the main purpose of Ghana’s participation in the Unity Cup is to achieve team building with a fairly new group of players.
He made this known in an exclusive interview with Citi Sports while discussion the quality of opposition in the Unity Cup beyond Nigeria.
The four nation tournament that is taking place at the G-Tech Community Stadium in England also had Trinidad and Tobago and Jamaica competing in it.
Several established members of the Black Stars including Thomas Partey and Inaki Williams have missed the tournament; Ghana lost 2-1 to Nigeria and will play against Trinidad and Tobago in the third place game but Tophic Sienu was adamant of the quality of the Caribbean nations and Ghana’s purpose in England.

“Until recently, who knew that Niger and Sudan would be able to deny Ghana qualification to the AFCON but they did. Until recently, countries like Comoros have been boogey sides for Ghana, disturbing us…so it’s about having to play the game, getting to know the players, achieving the purpose of team building that is the most important thing.”

He added that qualifying to the 2026 FIFA World Cup is the only compensation the GFA can give to Ghanaians after the Black Stars failed to qualify to the AFCON for the first time in 20 years. (Click highlighted text to read full story)
