Ghana’s Senior Women’s National Team, the Black Queens, were given a rousing reception at the Kotoka International Airport on Monday, July 28, following their third-place finish at the 2024 Africa Women’s Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco.
The Queens clinched the bronze medal after a dramatic 4-3 penalty shootout victory over South Africa Banyana Banyana, marking their first podium finish at the continental tournament since 2016.

The tightly contested third-place playoff ended 1-1 in regulation time before the Queens held their nerve to edge past Banyana Banyana.
Their arrival in Accra was met with vibrant celebrations, as hundreds of supporters—dressed in national colours—gathered from as early as 4:00 a.m. to welcome the team.

Fans sang, danced, and waved flags in appreciation of the players’ efforts and achievements.
This milestone is being hailed as a major boost in the team’s rebuilding process under head coach Kim Lars. It also ends an eight-year medal drought for the Black Queens and reignites hopes for the continued growth of women’s football in Ghana.
Officials from the Ghana Football Association (GFA), the Ministry of Sports and Recreation, and former national players were present at the airport to receive the team.
