The highly anticipated CAA Region II Senior Athletics Championship has been rescheduled to Monday, 18 August, and Tuesday, 19 August 2025, following the declaration of a National Mourning Period by President John Dramani Mahama.

The change comes in the wake of the tragic helicopter crash that claimed multiple lives, prompting the President to call for a solemn observance across the nation.

The championship, originally slated for 15 and 16 August, will now be held at the University of Ghana Stadium under the revised dates.

In a statement, the Local Organizing Committee (LOC) revealed that the decision was taken in consultation with the Confederation of African Athletics (CAA) Region II and relevant national authorities.

The LOC emphasized that the adjustment was made out of respect for the victims and in alignment with national protocols.

“We want to assure all participating countries, athletes, officials, sponsors, and stakeholders that this change will not affect the quality and integrity of the championship,” the statement read. “All logistics, accreditation, and technical arrangements will be updated to ensure a smooth and successful event.”

The CAA Region II Senior Athletics Championship is one of the most prestigious competitions on the African athletics calendar, drawing top talent from across West Africa.

Press Statement from Ghana Athletics

This year’s edition promises fierce competition as athletes battle for regional glory while representing their nations with pride.

With preparations now realigned, the LOC says it is confident of delivering a world-class championship that will honour both the sporting excellence of the continent and the memory of those lost in the tragedy.
