The Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) has announced the temporary suspension of the King’s Baton Relay in response to the tragic helicopter crash near Obuasi that claimed the lives of eight prominent Ghanaian statesmen.
In a press statement issued on Thursday, August 7, 2025, the GOC expressed deep sorrow over the incident, which occurred on Wednesday, August 6. Among the deceased were two serving government ministers — Dr. Edward Kofi Omane Boamah and Alhaji Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed.
Describing the moment as one of national mourning, the GOC stated:
“The nation is in mourning and keening, and we have decided to put on hold, the relay activities until further notice.”
The Committee extended its condolences to the government and bereaved families, assuring the public that further communication on the relay’s resumption will be provided by the close of the day.
“We appreciate the understanding and cooperation of all parties involved and look forward to resuming the relay when circumstances permit,” the statement concluded.
The King’s Baton Relay is part of preparations toward the upcoming Commonwealth Games and symbolises unity across Commonwealth nations.
