Captain of Nigeria’s National Men’s Football Team (the Super Eagles), William Troost-Ekong, says the team is super focused on qualifying to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
He said this against the backdrop of the Super Eagles boycotting training over outstanding bonuses ahead of a crucial World Cup qualifier against Gabon on Thursday, November 13 in Rabat, Morocco at 16:00 GMT.
The boycott caught the attention of the football world and led to several deliberations before the bonuses were reportedly settled on Wednesday, November 12.
Nigerian Football Federation Technical Director, Augustine Eguavoen in a related development slammed the timing of the team’s decision to boycott training over bonuses but Troost-Ekong believes that despite the issue altering their preparation to an extent, the team is focused on qualifying. “We understand the gravity of these games and I think even for the young players, everyone wants to make a name for themselves and wants to achieve something with Nigeria.”

“There’s a real sense of urgency and focus” he said in an interview with Victor Ademola.

Should Nigeria beat Gabon, they will play against the winner of Cameroon’s tie against DR Congo on Sunday.
