Club Brugge produced a dramatic late comeback to secure a 3–3 draw against Atlético Madrid in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League knockout phase play-off, leaving the tie finely balanced ahead of the return leg in Spain.

The Belgian hosts found themselves 2–0 down at halftime after a composed penalty from Julián Álvarez and a close-range finish by Ademola Lookman, giving Atlético Madrid firm control of the contest before the break.

However, Brugge emerged from the interval with renewed energy. Nigerian midfielder Raphael Onyedika pulled one back moments into the second half before Nicolò Tresoldi levelled on the hour mark with a well-taken finish that shifted momentum firmly in favour of the home side.

Atlético briefly looked to have regained the advantage when defender Joel Ordóñez turned the ball into his own net under pressure, but the drama was far from over. With just a minute left on the clock, Greek winger Christos Tzolis fired home a superb equaliser in the 89th minute to complete a pulsating encounter.

Diego Simeone’s side had started brightly and appeared comfortable early on, but Brugge’s persistence and attacking intent in the second half ensured the Spanish visitors could not hold on for victory.

The second leg is set to take place in Madrid, where both teams will battle for a place in the Round of 16 against either Liverpool or Tottenham Hotspur. The tie remains wide open after a thrilling first-leg showdown.
