The Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, has paid a historic working visit to the offices of the Ghana Olympic Committee at the Olympic House in Accra, where board members made a donation to the newly established Ghana Sports Fund.
In a notable departure from traditional protocol, the minister chose to meet the GOC leadership at their offices rather than summoning them to the ministry, a gesture widely seen as recognition of the autonomy of the Olympic movement.
Led by GOC President Richard Akpokavie, the board welcomed the government delegation as both parties discussed strategies to strengthen Ghana’s sporting future and enhance preparations for upcoming international competitions.

During the meeting, the minister acknowledged the GOC’s critical role in driving Ghana’s participation and success on the global stage, particularly ahead of the 2026 Commonwealth Games.
Both sides emphasised the need to move away from last-minute preparations toward a more structured system based on long-term investment, scientific training and athlete development across multiple disciplines.
The highlight of the visit came when the GOC board officially announced their support for the Ghana Sports Fund. President Akpokavie and members of the board made a personal donation to the fund, describing it as a move intended to inspire the private sector to also contribute to the development of sports in the country.

Akpokavie noted that the fund could serve as the financial backbone needed to reduce the country’s heavy dependence on government funding while giving lesser-known sports greater opportunities to thrive.
“The Sports Fund is the financial engine required to move Ghana beyond its heavy reliance on the national budget,” he said, adding that the initiative could help bring more balance to sports development in the country.

Receiving the donation, Minister Adams commended the GOC board for what he described as “leadership by example.” He assured stakeholders that the fund would be managed with transparency and accountability, ensuring that contributions are channelled into key areas such as sports infrastructure, athlete welfare and grassroots talent identification.
The minister added that the visit forms part of a broader government effort to strengthen collaboration with sports federations as Ghana looks to build a sustainable system capable of delivering international success.
