Messi magic crowns Inter Miami’s new home debut in thrilling 2-2 draw

Under the lights of their newly unveiled stadium, Inter Miami CF marked a historic chapter with a 2-2 draw against Austin FC, but the evening ultimately belonged to the Argentine maestro, Lionel Messi, whose brilliance carried the occasion.

Messi rose to the moment early, scoring Inter Miami’s first-ever goal at their new home with a towering header in the 10th minute, cancelling out Austin’s sixth-minute opener and igniting a packed stadium.
It was a goal rich in symbolism, the club’s greatest star christening a venue that now bears his imprint both on and off the pitch.

From that point, Messi dictated the rhythm. Inter Miami dominated proceedings with 65.6 per cent possession, fired 27 shots and registered eight on target, numbers that reflected their control and attacking intent, much of it flowing through the World Cup winner.

Yet, despite the control, Inter Miami found themselves chasing the game again after Austin restored their lead in the second half. Once more, Messi was at the heart of the response. His movement, vision and set-piece delivery kept Austin pinned back, creating waves of pressure that eventually told.

Although it was Luis Suárez who levelled late on with an 82nd-minute volley, the build-up and sustained attacking momentum stemmed largely from Messi’s influence.

He nearly crowned the night with a winner, first seeing a late effort denied by a sharp save, then striking the crossbar with a free-kick in stoppage time, inches away from sealing a fairytale ending.

Beyond the statistics, Messi’s imprint was unmistakable. He completed dribbles, created chances and remained the focal point of every dangerous Miami move, underlining why he continues to define this Inter Miami era.

For a club celebrating a long-awaited homecoming, the result may have fallen short of perfection. But with Messi at the centre of it all, the night still felt historic.

And if this was the opening act in their new home, it served as a reminder that wherever Messi plays, the story is never short of brilliance.
