San Antonio Spurs head coach Mitch Johnson says the team will follow proper medical protocol after star centre Victor Wembanyama suffered a concussion during their playoff clash with the Portland Trail Blazers.
Wembanyama was forced off after a heavy fall in the Spurs’ 106-103 Game 2 loss, which levelled the first-round series at 1-1. The 22-year-old Frenchman had five points, four rebounds and a block in 12 minutes before his early exit.
Johnson, speaking after the game, said initial assessments point only to a concussion, with the team set to monitor him closely ahead of Game 3 on April 25 in Portland.
The injury comes just days after Wembanyama was named the NBA Defensive Player of the Year, adding further concern for the Spurs as the series shifts.

“I just know he has a concussion and he’s in the protocol. We’ll obviously take the proper and appropriate steps” Johnson said.

Portland guard Scoot Henderson scored 31 points in 38 games to lead all players in scoring.
