The Board Chairman of Accra Great Olympics FC, Major (Rtd) Amarkai Amarteifio, has said the club’s relegation from the top flight had “very little to do with football”, while expressing confidence that the team will return to the Premier League.
Great Olympics were relegated at the end of the 2023/24 season after finishing 16th in the Ghana Premier League, dropping into the Access Bank Division One League.
The circumstances surrounding their relegation included a dramatic conclusion to the campaign. On the final day of the season, 16 June 2024, the Accra-based club were awarded a 3–0 walkover victory after Real Tamale United failed to honour their fixture at the Accra Sports Stadium.
The result handed Great Olympics three points, taking them to a total of 44 points. However, the outcome was not enough to preserve their top-flight status.
Speaking to Citi Sports, Amarteifio acknowledged his disappointment but stressed that efforts are already underway behind the scenes to ensure a swift return to the top division.
“I’m not too happy about our present situation, but everything that we should do to bring it back to where it belongs, we are doing it. It begs the question that the Great Olympics were supposed to be the third force.
It will be. It will be again. Accra Great Olympics will be again.
It will not be the third force. It will be the force to reckon with. It will be. It has to be.”
The chairman’s remarks underline the club’s ambition to re-establish itself as a major force in Ghanaian football, having historically been regarded as one of the country’s prominent sides.

He also addressed the circumstances of the club’s relegation, suggesting that factors beyond on-field performance played a significant role in their drop from the Premier League.
“We went to relegation from premiership. Why we went to relegation, how we went to relegation had very little to do with football.
It had not very little to do with football. Be that as it may, we will come back.”
While he did not elaborate on the specific issues he believes contributed to the relegation, his comments hint at broader concerns surrounding the events of the season.
Despite the setback, the club’s leadership appears focused on rebuilding and mounting a strong challenge in the Division One League. The emphasis, according to the chairman, is on restoring Great Olympics to where they believe the club belongs.
