2026 World Cup: “I’m not 100% confident in Black Stars”- Former Sports Minister states

A former Minister of Sports, Edwin Nii Lante Vanderpuye, says he isn’t confident in the Black Stars’ campaign at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

He made this comment on Citi FM ahead of Ghana’s National Men’s Football Team’s opening game against Panama on Wednesday, June 17, in Canada.

Ghana’s preparations for the tournament have been disrupted by poor preparation after playing just one friendly game under head coach Carlos Queiroz, who was appointed in March, and the almost certain absence of deputy captain Thomas Partey for the Panama game after his visa was denied by Canada.

Speaking on the Black Stars’ upcoming run in the tournament, the former Sports Minister had cautious optimism by stating,

“I’m not 100% confident in our team; I’m not. I am a Ghanaian…but I’m confident in them.

The confidence I had in the team that went to the 2006 World Cup, 2010 and even 2014 World Cup, it’s not the same as now due to the fact that this team has not been a consistent team.”

“There’s been too many mix ups in this team and worst of all, look at the change in the timing in the change of the technical department…and unfortunately, we are looking at a team that is training under this coach for just about a month” he said.
