The Accra Sports Stadium will remain closed to competitive football until Ghana’s 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against The Gambia, according to National Sports Authority Director General, Yaw Ampofo Ankrah.
The decision means clubs that use the facility as their home venue will have to find alternative stadia when the 2026/27 Ghana Premier League season gets underway this weekend.
Hearts of Oak are among the clubs expected to be affected by the temporary closure.
The Black Stars are scheduled to open their AFCON qualifying campaign away to Ivory Coast on September 24, 2026, at the Stade de la Paix in Bouaké.
Ghana will then play its first Group C home fixture three days later, hosting The Gambia at the Accra Sports Stadium.
Ampofo Ankrah explained that the closure will allow the NSA to undertake renovation and maintenance works at the facility, with the aim of ensuring that the stadium meets the standards required by the Confederation of African Football.
“Ghana Premier League clubs or any other club that will play their home games at the Accra Sports Stadium must look for an alternative venue because the Accra Sports Stadium will not be in use until the Black Stars’ home game against The Gambia in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers,” he told Asempa FM’s Ultimate Sports Show.
“We will ensure the stadium is up to the standard set by CAF.”
The Black Stars will continue their qualifying campaign in November with back-to-back matches against Somalia, before concluding the group stage with fixtures against Ivory Coast and The Gambia in March 2027.
Ghana are aiming to return to the Africa Cup of Nations after missing out on the previous edition of the tournament in Morocco.
The Black Stars will therefore begin their qualification campaign with a difficult away trip to Ivory Coast before welcoming The Gambia to Accra three days later.
