Former Arsenal and France midfielder Patrick Vieira has been appointed as the new head coach of the Senegal national team.
The Senegalese Football Federation confirmed Vieira’s appointment on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, following the departure of former coach Pape Thiaw.
Vieira’s appointment represents a homecoming for the former France international, who was born in Dakar in 1976 before moving to France at the age of eight.
The 50-year-old enjoyed a distinguished playing career, winning the 1998 FIFA World Cup with France and becoming one of the most decorated midfielders of his generation.

Vieira also maintains strong links with Senegal. In 2003, he helped establish the Diambars Academy, which was created to develop young football talent in the country.
His appointment comes after Senegal’s elimination from the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the Round of 32, with Thiaw subsequently leaving his position.

Vieira’s immediate task will be to guide the Teranga Lions through qualification for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, with qualifiers scheduled to begin in September.
The Senegal FA says the date for Vieira’s official presentation and further details of his appointment will be announced later.
Vieira returns to international management after coaching at club level with New York City FC, Nice, Crystal Palace, Strasbourg and Genoa.
He now faces the challenge of leading one of Africa’s leading football nations, with Senegal targeting another strong AFCON campaign and qualification for the 2030 FIFA World Cup.
