Who’s the best Ghanaian player in Premier League history? Sports Panorama team settles debate

It’s a debate that has raged on social media in recent weeks, with the Premier League set to return on June 17 after a long break due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Who is Ghana’s best-ever player in the history of the English top-flight?

A number of Ghanaian have played and thrived in the Premier League over the years.

Tony Yeboah was adored during his time at Leeds United and is regarded as a legend there despite spending only two full seasons at the club.

Michael Essien was regarded as one of the world’s best midfielders while at Chelsea while Andre and Jordan Ayew, and Jeffrey Schlupp have found some success in the league as well.

Others including Sulley Muntari, Richard Kingson, Asamoah Gyan and John Paintsil have also had their time under the English spotlight.

But which of them is the best?

For Citi Sports‘ Daniel Koranteng, there’s no doubt about who should be regarded as Ghana’s best export to the Premier League – Michael Essien.

He actually insists that it would be a “sin” to think anyone other than Essien was the best.

After acknowledging Jeff Schlupp (Leicester City, Crystal Palace), Tony Yeboah (Leeds) and Jordan Ayew’s (Aston Villa, Swansea and Crystal Palace) impact for their sides, Daniel Koranteng proceeded to state that Essien was unarguably the best Ghanaian to have ever played in the Premier League.

Christopher Nimley shared his sentiments, stating that Essien, Yeboah and Jordan Ayew were light years ahead of any Ghanaian who featured in the league.

One of Nathan Quao picks was Asamoah Gyan, who made a lasting impact on the Premier League despite his short stint at Sunderland.

Even General Secretary of the Ghana Football Association, Prosper Harrison Addo, had his say.

Take a look at their picks in this extract from Sports Panorama:
