Amartey out of 25-man Europa League squad due to injury – Rodgers

Leicester City manager Brendan Rodgers has opened up on what informed the club’s decision to omit Daniel Amartey from their UEFA Europa League squad.

The Ghana international was missing from Leicester City’s 25-man squad for the group stages of this season’s competition, after the squad registration deadline passed last week.

According to Rodgers, Amartey’s recent injury against West Ham, before the international break, will keep him out till at least December, hence Leicester’s decision to leave him out of the Europa squad.

“Daniel was purely [excluded] because of injury. He’s going to be out for a long period,” Leicester coach Brendan Rodgers said, Leicester Mercury has reported.

“He’s sustained a really bad hamstring injury which is such a shame because he’s worked so hard after a couple of years out, to get game-time and play so well against Manchester City, and then to play against West Ham and to pick up the injury.

“We were so disappointed for him. So he wasn’t going to feature for us [in the Europa League group stage].”

The 25 year old could however be registered for the competition in January should he regain fitness and the club progress to the knock-out stage of the competition.

Amartey only returned from a long injury layoff earlier this month, after missing almost two years of competitive action.
