Former Director of the Sports Directorate at the University of Ghana, Dr. Bella Bello Bitugu, is calling for a paradigm shift in the way society approaches sports.

Dr. Bitugu added that sports has so much more potential to offer beyond the competitive edge it comes with at the surface value.

He said this in an interview on the sidelines of the opening ceremony of the University of Ghana Africa-Uninet Summer Workshop on Tuesday, September 17.

The four day event is scheduled to end on September 20 and is operating under the theme, “Exploring an integrated approach to disasters and conflict response through medical, sports and social perspectives.”

The event attracted educationists from Universities in Austria, Burkina Faso and the University of Ghana including the PROVOST at the College of Education, Professor Samuel Nii Ardey Codjoe.

“We have been obsessed too much with winning tournaments and competitions from the practitioners to the governing bodies and the rest and I think that a paradigm shift away from obsession with winning…sports has so much potential. Using sports as a tool for development issues; Sports is an institution, it’s a world on its own…and we have not been using it to that extend and that is what we are saying.”
