A former Finance Minister, Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam, has called on Finance Minister, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, to provide clarity on his intention to abolish the Betting Tax.

He made this call during his speech delivered at the New Patriotic Party (NPP)-led Minority’s response on Thursday, March 13 in response to the National Budget Presentation delivered by Dr. Forson on Tuesday, March 11 on the floor of Ghana’s Ninth Parliament of the Fourth Republic.

In the budget presentation, Dr. Forson stated that the National Democratic Congress led government will abolish the 10% tax on betting winnings charged under the NPP administration and in an immediate response, Dr. Adam stated that the immediate past administration “we never collected betting tax, we never implemented it.”

Doubling down on his stance apparently in a direct response to Dr. Forson’s claim on ChannelOne TV’s The Point of View that the betting tax was indeed collected, Dr. Adam stated that Dr. Forson must come clear on his stance.

“If you want to abolish betting tax, you have to be very clear about that because you cannot use betting tax to generalize for tax on other games of chances; this was my confusion as well and so…whilst I concede that my statement was misleading (on Tuesday), without the clarifications I have provided today, the confusion about betting tax or lottery winning tax is not mine, it is the Minister’s confusion and the Minister must come out and clarify that” Dr. Adam stated on Thursday, March 13.
