Arsenal legend Paul Merson says he was left speechless by Chelsea’s display following their Carabao Cup semi-final elimination at the hands of Arsenal.
The Blues crashed out 4–2 on aggregate, with Merson arguing that the manner of the defeat was more disappointing than the scoreline itself.
According to the former England international, Chelsea approached both legs too cautiously and failed to show the urgency expected at such a crucial stage of the competition.

Speaking after the game, Merson questioned the mentality and ambition shown by the London side, insisting a club of Chelsea’s stature should never exit a major tournament so quietly.
I honestly can’t believe what I just watched,” he said.
This is Chelsea Football Club. They’ve got international players, World Cup winners ; this is not a bottom-four team. I’m lost for words. You can’t go out of a big semi-final like that.

Merson added that while tactical gambles can sometimes pay off, Chelsea’s conservative setup ultimately backfired, urging teams in such moments to “go out in a blaze of glory” rather than fade away without a fight.
The result sends Arsenal into the Carabao Cup final with renewed confidence, as they now await the outcome of the Newcastle United versus Manchester City clash to know their opponent.”
