#Donkomi: Ghana’s Raphael Dwamena joins Danish club Vejle Boldklub

Black Stars striker, Raphael Dwamena, will hope to put a difficult last few months behind him after he signed for Danish club, Vejle Boldklub on Thursday.

Dwamena joined Spanish Second Division club, Real Zaragoza on loan from Levante in 2019 but was ruled out of on-field action later that year due to health concerns.

The player’s heart condition, which had previously scuppered a move to the Premier League had apparently resurfaced.

Dwamena underwent successful heart surgery in January but doubts remained as to whether he would take to the field again.

However, the player himself has shown that he is ready to return to on-field action.

He has now been given a lifeline by the Danish club who have offered him a contract.

Vejle BK are one of the most successful clubs in Danish football history with five league titles and six domestic cups.

Technical manager at Vejle Boldklub, Jacob Krüger, said the club belies Dwamena could be the key to a successful campaign.

“Raphael Dwamena is a physically strong striker who has both speed and good technique. It is a player we believe can help ensure a good season in the Super League.

“Raphael will be a great addition to our offensive line. He joins the club after a successful rehabilitation. Despite this, the necessary time has been spent to ensure that the player is fit for fight.”

Back on the rise

After a rough period, Dwamena’s form looked to be back on the rise at his new club Real Zaragoza.

Following a stunning pre-season campaign, and a good start to the season, it appeared that Dwamena had finally put a troubled past behind him and was heading back to his very best.

His season-long loan move to Zaragoza from Levante was seen as a make-or-break one after a disappointing season with his parent club where he struggled to find his best form, being relegated to 16 appearances in all competitions, scoring just one goal.

He had moved to Levante despite seemingly bound for Premier League club Brighton who were willing to shelve out £10 million for the striker.

However, the biggest disappointment of the career of this young forward saw the deal fall through after he failed a medical.

This was a huge blow for a striker who had been tipped for greatness in Europe, having earned rave reviews at FC Zurich, scoring 13 times and assisting 12 more in his final season for the Swiss club.

Dwamena had drawn blanks in Zaragoza’s first three games of the season against Tenerife, Ponferradina and Elche despite starting all three games.

He finally got his reward against Alcorcón, scoring his first goal of the season.

He managed one more goal in his next five games before his season was unceremoniously cut short.

Dwamena will hope this move will be the catalyst for the revival of a striker who had been tipped to lead the Black Stars’ line.
