Who was Ghana’s most creative player in Europe’s top leagues last season?

When Ghanaian players are talked about, it’s often about how strong or hardworking they are.

This stereotypical view of Ghanaian players has become entrenched due to the successes of players like Michael Essien and Sulley Muntari in Europe.

However, Ghana has had its significant share of technically-gifted, creative players as well. From Anthony Baffour to Abedi Pele and Kwadwo Asamoah, the nation had produced players who could pick a pass as well as anyone.

Last season, Ghanaian players racked up the assists in Europe’s top leagues.

Andre Ayew, who was Ghana’s highest scorer in Europe, was also Ghana’s most creative player with seven assists for Swansea last season.

Perhaps surprisingly, out-of-favour Christian Atsu laid on three goals for Newcastle in the last campaign to place high on the list.

Let’s look at Ghana’s assist leaders in the just-ended season.

Here’s a list of Ghana’s assist-leaders in Europe.

  1. Andre Ayew (Championship – Swansea) 44 matches – 7 assists
  2. Alfred Duncan (Serie A – Sassuolo/Fiorentina) – 26 matches –  6 assists
  3. Christian Atsu (Premier League – Newcastle)  19 matches – 3 assists
  4. Andy Yiadom (Championship – Reading) 24 matches – 3 assists
  5. Albert Adomah (Championship – Middlesbrough/Cardiff City) 33 matches – 3 assists
  6. Jeff Schlupp (Premier League – Crystal Palace) 17 matches  – 2 assists
  7. Christopher Antwi-Adjei (Bundesliga – Paderborn) 34 matches – 2 assists
  8. Jordan Ayew (Premier League – Crystal Palace) 37 matches – 2 assists
  9. Abdul Majeed Waris (Ligue 1 – Strasbourg) 7 matches – 1 assist
  10. Kwadwo Asamoah (Serie A – Inter Milan) – 8 matches – 1 assist
  11. Bernard Tekpetey (Bundesliga – Fortuna Dusseldorf) 9 matches – 1 assist
  12. Salisu Karim (La Liga – Real Valladolid) 31 matches – 1 assist
  13. Joseph Aidoo (La Liga – Celta Vigo) 32 matches – 1 assist

Honourable mention

Kwasi Okyere Wriedt (Bayern Munich II) – 33 matches – 6 assists
