Kotoko 0-1 Great Olympics: Oly Dade punish lackluster Porcupines in Accra

Kumasi Asante Kotoko suffered their first defeat of the 2020/2021 Ghana Premier League season, going down 1-0 at home to Accra Great Olympics on Thursday.

Micheal Yeboah’s second half header from a Gladson Awako set up, gave the Dade Boys a deserved win and piled more misery on the Porcupine Warriors.

Striker William Opoku Mensah was handed the role up front in the absence of the injured Osman Ibrahim but the former Karela United captain failed to impress in a game largely dictated by former Ghana U-20 star Gladson Awako.

The Olympics midfielder was menacing in his runs and nimble in his dribbles as Kotoko struggled to contain him all afternoon.

Patrick Asmah, who was preferred at left back to Imoro Ibrahim only lasted half an hour and had to come off due to injury with Ibrahim taking his place.

After a goalless first half, Olympics finally got the opening goal in the 54th minute, Yeboah connecting from an Awako cross to put the ball beyond Kwame Baah.

Underfire Kotoko boss, Maxwell Konadu, threw in Sulley Muniru for Godfred Asiamah to try and rescue a point but it was too little too late as Olympics saw out a famous win.

The win lifts Olympics up to 5th on the table, 4 points off leaders Karela United with a game in hand.

Kotoko on the hand, slip down to 11th, with just the one win from 4 games so far this campaign.

Head coach, Maxwell Konadu’s job is set to come into scrutiny after yet another lackluster display, with the 23 time league champions managing just 3 goals in their 4 games so far this season.

“It was a difficult game. The first half we didn’t look good but we came into the second half and started doing the basic things. We have taken lessons from this and will work on them.

Some of the new players are only beginning in settle in. They will get better. They know the demands of the supporters and will respond accordingly,” Konadu said after the game.

Next up for Kotoko is a run of 3 games in the next 9 days.
