We will privatise Winneba Sports College – Sports Minister

Minister for Youth and Sports, Mustapha Ussif, says his outfit is looking at partnerships with private investors to help sustain the Winneba Sports College.

In February 2018, the Director of the National Sports College in Winneba, Mr. Eric Nkansah Dwamena, told Citi Sports that a renovation project worth $1.2 million had been called off due to the failure of the state to raise a portion of the stated sum.

Although the facility is in a bad condition, it is still being utilized for the purpose of sports training for non-residents.

In an interview on Citi TV’s, Face To Face, Mustapha Ussif stated that his administration is focused on privatising the sporting college in order to help give the facility a facelift in order to ensure that it keeps churning out more talent in various sports disciplines.

“In [NPP’s] 2020 manifesto, we promised Ghanaians that once they give us the mandate to serve for a second term, we will ensure that we privatise the Winneba Sports College. That is, get the private sector to participate in managing the facility,” he said.

“The facility has resulted in the nation getting talents. With the likes of Samuel Inkoom and others as key products of the Sports College. We cannot afford to watch the facility deteriorate which is why the Ministry of Youth and Sports, together with the government, is ensuring that we have a strategic partner so that we can revive the College.”

The Sports Minister also highlighted that three additional sports colleges will be built through private partnerships to help develop sporting talents in the country.

“Aside from that, the NPP government, in its manifesto, promised to add three extra sports academies through private sector participation. So it is something we are looking at. We have already done a feasibility study and from there we can actively commence work with these private entities.”
