GFA President wants new AWCON qualifying format scrapped

President of the Ghana Football Association, Kurt Okraku has condemned the new format for the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, following the Black Queens exit from the series.

The format sees the qualifying round divided into zones which will see 12 teams qualify to the main competition, it also serves as qualifying to the Women’s World Cup.

Ghana were eliminated by WAFU Zone B rivals Nigeria, and will not play competitive football for the next 3 years.

Okraku believes the new format does not protect the powerhouses of women’s football in Africa.

“The Black Queens were super good against Nigeria in both games, unfortunately the score line did not reflect. Kurt Okraku said.

“But it is normal, especially when the new format of the competition does not protect the super powers of football on the West Africa Coast.”

“And that has been one of my clarion calls at the CAF level, I want the format changed because Africa must be represented by the best clubs and countries.

“And if it is the case that Ghana has to play against Cameroon, Nigeria or Ivory Coast, it is not fair and I have spoken at varied levels of football in the world and it is something that I am going to push for until Justice is done.

The Black Queens lost the first leg of the tie 2-0 in Nigeria, before returning to Ghana for the second leg which they won 1-0, losing on a 2-1 aggregate.

Meaning Ghana will not participate in the upcoming Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in 2022 and the Women’s World Cup.
