Sprinter Benjamin Azamati set a new national 100m record on Friday, finishing in a time of 9.90s at the Texas Relays.

The Ghanaian flew past the record time of  9.97s he set in at the same event in 2021, which had broken the old 22-year-old record of 9.98s.

The West Texas A&M dominated the race at the Mike A. Myers Track and Soccer Stadium, finishing well clear of Dashinelle Dyer in second place (10.35s) and Demarius Smith (10.36s).

NATIONAL RECORD!!!

While we are all fixated on the Black Stars’ game vs Nigeria, lets remember to appreciate Benjamin Azamati who has just set a new national record in the 100m with a 9.90s run (prev record 9.97). What a start to the outdoor season! #GhanaVsNaija #Citisports pic.twitter.com/sKUvSTeAFi

It was fantastic start to the outdoor season for Azamati just a month after he began his indoor season with an African-leading time of 6.54s to win the 60m finals at the 2022 NM Collegiate Classic.

He is now joint No. 4 on the collegiate 100m all-time chart in the US.

Here is an UPDATED LOOK at the all-time top-5 in collegiate history in the Men's 100 Meters:

Christian Coleman, 9.82
Divine Oduduru, 9.86
Ngoni Makusha, 9.89
Benjamin Azamati, 9.90
Trayvon Bromell, 9.90
