The Ghana Tennis Federation (GTF), in collaboration with Wheelchair Tennis and with support from the International Tennis Federation (ITF), is set to host a National Wheelchair Tennis Juniors Training Camp.
This event will bring together over 30 junior wheelchair tennis players from across Ghana at the Accra Sports Stadium Tennis Court on December 3, 2024.
The training camp aligns with the ITF’s Wheelchair Tennis Player Pathway, which aims to introduce children with physical disabilities, aged 10 to 18, to wheelchair tennis and equip them with the skills needed to pursue professional careers in the sport.
This initiative also complements the GTF Wheelchair Tennis Committee’s new policy emphasizing the integration of education in developing junior wheelchair tennis players.
Coinciding with World Disability Day 2024, the camp highlights this year’s theme, “Amplifying the Leadership of People with Disabilities for an Inclusive and Sustainable Future.”
The event underscores the Federation’s commitment to celebrating and empowering individuals with disabilities worldwide.
The camp will not only introduce the sport to new participants but also enable the GTF to compile a comprehensive database of junior wheelchair tennis players in Ghana.
This database will inform targeted interventions and strategic player development programs in 2025.
The training will be led by GTF National Wheelchair Tennis Coaches Yahya Macaulay and Philip Plange, with additional guidance from regional coaches such as Emmanuel Yaw Boateng.
