Immediate past President of the Ghana Psychological Association (GPA), Dr. Collins Agyemang Badu, has revealed that the Association offered its services to the Black Stars ahead of Ghana’s National Football Team’s campaign at the 2022 FIFA World Cup but the request was seemingly ignored.
He said this in an exclusive interview with Citi Sports while speaking on the Black Stars recently getting veteran Belgian Kris Perquy as the team’s lead psychologist.
This comes after several years of the team operating without a psychologist and seeing the Ghana Football Association (GFA) hire Perquy was a development Dr. Badu welcomed but expressed disappointment over how Ghana missed out on getting “psychological” tremendous help by not responding to the GPA’s calls in previous years. “Practitioners within the field of psychology have approached some leadership within the sports fraternity and encouraged them that we cannot go into a tournament, a competition without having a psychologist on board. We contacted them and we made our approach so clear.”

“A case in point was just before Qatar 2022, we were very vehement with our suggestion to some of the leaders within the Ministry (Sports) and the Football Association that let’s consider doing this but unfortunately it looks as if the interest at the time was not there.”
