As part of its 8th anniversary in Ghana, global sports retailer Decathlon has pledged a renewed focus on developing Ghana’s sporting ecosystem; both at grassroots and national levels.

The company, which entered the Ghanaian market in 2017, says the milestone is not just a celebration of longevity, but an opportunity to deepen its role in making sports more accessible and impactful for everyday Ghanaians.

Thompson Agbodo, Events and Brands Manager at Decathlon Ghana, emphasized the company’s growing influence within the local sports industry, highlighting their consistent contribution over the years

“We are the leading sports providers in Ghana now, to be doing that consistently for eight years is a major feat. We’ve partnered with various associations, including the Ghana Football Association, and now we’re fully involved in total football; supporting both male and female national teams.

Agbodo explained that Decathlon’s involvement in Ghanaian football has expanded significantly, moving beyond retail into direct partnerships with key events and federations.

The company was recently present at the FA Cup and Women’s FA Cup finals at the University of Ghana Stadium, where it awarded souvenirs to standout players.

We’ve come a long way. From just offering gear, we now stand alongside Ghanaian athletes; providing not just products, but visibility, encouragement, and technical support.

While football remains central, Decathlon says its support extends beyond the mainstream. Mawuli Kofi, the company’s B2B Manager, noted that the brand is committed to helping clubs and associations in less-commercialized sports through affordability initiatives.

Football clubs are struggling to buy equipment in bulk. So we’ve slashed costs significantly to help them operate better,” he said. “Our goal is to ensure every sport not just football; has a chance to grow.

Francisca Zogli, Decathlon’s E-commerce Manager, added that technology is being used to extend reach and inclusivity.

This helps bring sports closer to the ordinary Ghanaian. Our platforms make it easier for people to access quality sportswear and equipment without barriers.

To mark the anniversary, Decathlon has rolled out a 10-day sports-themed celebration, running from May 21 to June 1, featuring activities aimed at families and sports enthusiasts alike. The Programme includes:

  • Weekend family games
  • Free delivery within Accra
  • Free equipment servicing and customization
  • Up to 50% discounts on Adidas products

The company emphasized that these are not just promotions, but part of a broader effort to foster a sporting culture at the community level.

As Decathlon enters its ninth year in Ghana, the focus appears clear: championing access, affordability, and visibility for Ghanaian athletes; whether they play football in stadiums or table tennis in local halls.
