Fans’ Banner Sparks Debate: Is it time to recall André Ayew? – Story by Evans Owusu

The Black Stars may have been on the pitch against Mali, but the loudest statement came from the stands. A banner hoisted by the supporters’ union, calling for the return of André “Dede” Ayew, lit up social media and radio discussions after security moved in to stop its display.

The moment was brief, but it was enough.

Photos of the banner circulated widely online, with media outlets reposting and asking the public: “Should Ayew be recalled?”

For many fans, the incident only confirmed what they had been feeling since Ghana’s 1–1 draw with Chad — the team is lacking urgency, African football experience, and above all, a passionate leader.

The Black Stars’ struggles have gone beyond tactics. Supporters say the players do not look hungry, the fire is missing, and there is no one to rally the squad in tight moments.

Against Chad and again against Mali, Ghana dominated possession but failed to impose itself when it mattered most.

Ayew’s name resurfaced naturally in these conversations. As Ghana’s most-capped player, with three World Cups and eight AFCONs under his belt, he represents the type of leadership and resilience the current team is missing.

The banner may have been taken down, but the message could not be silenced.

Fans online praised the gesture as “speaking truth to power” and reminded authorities that football belongs to the people. Many pointed out that Ayew’s visible passion and hunger for the badge are exactly what the current side lacks.

Critics of a recall argue it is time to move on.

Despite having no club currently, Ayew was active at the club level, scoring in Ligue 1 with Le Havre.

More importantly, he stands on the brink of history; no African has ever played in 9 AFCONs and 4 World Cups. Allowing him to achieve this would not just be about one man, but about Ghana’s place in continental football history.

The banner incident may have lasted only a few minutes, but it has sparked a bigger conversation that cannot be ignored.

Fans are asking tough questions about leadership, passion, and respect for legends.

Whether the Black Stars’ technical team listens or not, one thing is clear: André Ayew remains at the centre of a national debate about what the team needs most: experience, urgency, and pride in the jersey.

The people have spoken. The question now is whether the authorities will heed the call.
