Manchester United strengthened their hold on third place in the Premier League with a convincing 3–1 victory over Aston Villa at Old Trafford in a lively encounter on Sunday afternoon.
After a quiet first half that ended goalless, the match burst into life after the break as United showed clinical finishing to secure an important win for manager Michael Carrick.
The breakthrough came in the 57th minute when Brazilian midfielder Casemiro rose highest to meet a pinpoint corner from captain Bruno Fernandes. His glancing header struck the post before finding the net, sending the Old Trafford crowd into celebration.

Villa responded strongly and drew level midway through the second half. Midfielder Ross Barkley fired home a powerful first-time effort after United failed to clear their lines following a corner.
The goal initially sparked a VAR check for possible offside involving André Onana, but it was eventually allowed to stand.
For a brief spell, the game looked evenly poised as Villa pushed for a second goal. Substitute Tammy Abraham nearly gave the visitors the lead but was denied by a heavy touch inside the penalty area.

United capitalised on that reprieve moments later.
In the 73rd minute, Fernandes once again proved decisive. The Portuguese playmaker threaded a brilliant through ball to Matheus Cunha, who sprinted past the defence before drilling a low shot beyond Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez to restore United’s advantage.

With Villa pushing forward in search of another equaliser, United sealed the victory late on. Substitute Benjamin Šeško reacted quickest to a loose ball inside the box, firing home from close range after a deflection wrong-footed Martínez.

Fernandes was the standout performer, finishing the match with two assists and orchestrating much of United’s attacking play from midfield. His creativity proved the difference in a game that was tightly contested for long spells.
The victory means United continue their strong run of form, now recording three wins in their last four league matches.

More importantly, the result creates further daylight between them and Villa in the race for Champions League qualification.
As the final whistle blew and the famous “Glory, Glory Man United” echoed around Old Trafford, Carrick’s side left the pitch knowing they had taken another significant step toward securing a top-four finish.
