Ghana’s first boxing world champion, D.K. Poison, has been appointed as a Non-Executive Director at PKO, in a move aimed at recognising his contribution to the sport and reintegrating him into a leadership role within Ghanaian boxing.
The appointment forms part of PKO’s broader initiative to honour former athletes who played a key role in elevating Ghana’s global reputation in boxing.
D.K. Poison, who made history with his world title triumph, is expected to use his experience to help inspire young fighters and contribute to the continued development of the sport.

His inclusion at board level represents a symbolic and practical step toward reconnecting past legends with the present and future of boxing in the country.
It also highlights a growing effort within the sport to ensure that former stars remain relevant and supported beyond their active careers.
Reacting to the appointment, the former champion expressed appreciation to the PKO Foundation for its consistent support, particularly during a challenging period in his life.
Earlier this year, the foundation recognised him under its “Restoring Legends Hope” campaign, an initiative designed to support and celebrate retired sports personalities who have made significant contributions to Ghana’s sporting success.

Beyond the recognition, the foundation has also taken practical steps to support the boxing legend, including covering his medical needs and providing a monthly stipend to ensure his welfare. The gesture has drawn praise as an example of how institutions can care for former athletes who once brought honour to the nation.
Speaking on the support, D.K. Poison acknowledged the importance of such interventions, noting that many retired athletes often face difficulties after their playing days.
His appointment, coupled with the foundation’s continued assistance, underscores PKO’s commitment not only to the growth of boxing but also to preserving its legacy by supporting those who built it.
